Community Engagement and the Planning Process

On April 21, 2021 we held our second community meeting. Due to Covid-19 it had to be done virtually. You can watch the video and download the presentation below:

Due to the unique times that we’re in, the City is hosting several online opportunities for residents to learn about, review and comment on the proposed recommendations.

Background

The City of Gary adopted the 2019 Comprehensive Plan late last year.  This updated Comprehensive Plan involved significant community engagement including public meetings, focus groups, interviews and other means of collecting ideas and feedback from the community.

During the Comprehensive Plan Process, it became apparent that Gary would need a Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan, with the goal of developing a roadmap for improving streets and intersections to promote safe walking and biking throughout the City.

How to Get Involved

As with the Comprehensive Plan, input, ideas and feedback are a critical part of the development of our Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan.

The City invites residents to join our Google Class and hit the streets and snap pictures of their top infrastructure priorities for implementation. To participate:

  1. Snap and submit a photo and tell us why it matters to you.

  2. Post a pic on your social media account of you in action biking, using a trail or one of our cycling amenities with the hashtag #TakeBikeTheStreets or #BikeWalkGary

Over the course of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan development, residents will be able to review share their ideas through the online survey or paper survey, review recommendations and provided feedback during one of two virtual public meetings, Google Class and emails. The input will be incorporated into a draft plan, which will be available for residents to review this coming spring at reinvestingary.org/.
